Dynatrace devops

<youtube>
Dynatrace devops New Dynatrace devops
Dynatrace replaces DevOps with NoOps

In 2012, software intelligence company Dynatrace set out to achieve seamless automation from development to production. Its other goal was to move code from development to production in an hour versus 24 hours. However, at the time, development and operations teams weren?t collaborating well.

DevOps seemed like the right answer. Although operations had its own idea about it: Operations would build APIs developers could use. However, things were moving too slowly.

Next, Dynatrace built a new cloud based on its SaaS offering. It was completely self-healing, alleviating the need for operations people in production.

?We actually arrived at NoOps in 2014. We have developed it into a practice called ?autonomous cloud enablement,? said Dynatrace CTO and co-founder Bernd Greifeneder. ?DevOps has evolved into NoOps and autonomous cloud with self-healing approaches, automating runbooks down to zero and establishing a NoOps/autonomous cloud culture. Everyone wants to deliver business-relevant competitive services, not nurse applications and watch charts on dashboards to then execute tedious, repetitive tasks.?

Achieving one-hour code to production wasn?t easy

Dynatrace spent three years shrinking its 24-hour code to production window to one hour. At times, people thought it wasn?t even practical. Back then, 200 engineers worked on a single product. Now, there are 470.

Operations proved to be the biggest bottleneck which is why the company moved to NoOps in the first place. In fact, the 10-person R&D team is now the ?autonomous cloud enablement team.? Their job is to help people understand the concept of self-healing.

Meanwhile, one of the architects built a visualization device called the ?Dynatrace UFO? that advertises software errors in the cafeteria and other prominent places. Its purpose is to give engineers immediate feedback they can see and feel. Now when someone?s error appears, they fix it, pronto.

?Feedback is one of the most important cultural items. This is why we say, ?It?s not about continuous delivery, it?s about continuous delivery and feedback,? Said Greifeneder.

Customers freaked out

Dynatrace was so proud of its NoOps practice, it told customers about it. Apparently, they freaked out.

?So often m told], you?re alienating customers when you?re talking about NoOps because you sell operations. The reality is no because every CIO knows they need to do more with the same people and build more modern services and digital transformation,? said Greifeneder. ?They love the idea. They just don?t know how to get there.?

Eventually, customers started asking how it works. In response, Greifeneder and his team built a practice and blueprints.

?If you want a DevOps or NoOps culture, you need to break <down> the silos from the top down,? he said. ?Successful implementation will require moving people from operations to development. It is <also> important to remember you can?t create a successful DevOps practice or autonomous cloud enablement practice without executive buy-in.?

Dynatrace devops

Azure devops jenkins

<youtube>
Azure devops jenkins Daily news Azure devops jenkins
CI/CD pipeline notes

Jenkins vs Azure DevOps (formerly known as VSTS)

Jenkins is probably the number #1 Continuous Integration (and Continuous Delivery) tool for Java developers. It is very flexible and has a lot of supported plugins. There are more than 3000 plugins, so plenty to choose. This flexibility however also comes with a price. If you want to use Jenkins in a serious pipeline, you need a scripted workflow, fully integrated with other tools, secure from begin to end, etc. This is doable, but it is frustrating to implement and it certainly costs a lot of time.

For example, a lot of plugins depend on other plugins and often these need to be very specific versions. This results in a "plugin dependency hell". Also the use of some plugins is not always very straightforward. This certainly applies if you want to use them in a scripted pipeline. The examples on the Internet are not always clear and some descriptions assume that you know the ins- and outs of Jenkins. In addition, not all plugins support a multibranch pipeline, which basically makes them useless in modern CI/CD.
Statistics and metrics are non-existing in Jenkins, so if you are into these things you need a couple of plugins and Grafana to visualize, but you have to set this up from scratch.

Lately I have been working with Azure DevOps, formerly know as VSTS (Visual Studio Team Services) and although I am a bit biased when it concerns Jenkins (I do love it, really) and the combination of Microsoft and Java has not always been a good marriage, Azure DevOps grows on you. And Azure DevOps can be used for Java development. It supports Maven and Gradle tasks and the agents are able to run on Windows (of course), Mac and Linux. It has a lot of build-in tasks, both from Microsoft itself, but also downloadable tasks from the Azure DevOps marketplace. And if a task is not available you are able to create it yourself (using typescript).

I managed to set up a small pipeline in a day. This included a Maven build, SonarQube and Fortify scans and a deployment to PCF (Pivotal Cloud Foundry). Some Azure DevOps task are very powerful. I needed something to replace secure credentials in a manifest.yml file. No problem. I added a Tokenizer task from the Marketplace, entered the secure credentials as variables and that was it. I've done this in Jenkins before, but that took me way more time.

Does this mean that I abandon Jenkins? No, certainly not. Azure DevOps is not a silver bullet and some things are not very well supported or need to be improved. A small comparison:

Azure devops jenkins

How can this be done?

I have tried creating a team (Team1) for MyRepo1 and adding the user to that team. However, they still cannot see anything in ADO under my project. If I add them to the default team of the project, they can see all the repos (bad). This is how I set up Team1:

As an aside, if anyone knows of a good comprehensive reference for the proper way of using and orchestrating Organizations, Projects, Teams, Areas, Azure DevOps Groups, Users, Repositories, etc., please let me know. Each time I think I have these things under control, I get stuck in some scenario like this one. Add in Azure AD and Azure Subscriptions, and things get pretty hairy sometimes.

1 Answer 1

I would like to invite another user to contribute code to MyRepo1, but don't want them seeing MyRepo2. How can this be done?

The place you configured permissions is correct, but it seems you've set the wrong permission.

If you want to ensure that users in Team1 can contribute to MyRepos1, but cannot view MyRepos2, then, in the project settings page, go to MyRepos2-> Team1, and set the Read permission to Deny. This setting means "do not allow Team1 members to have read permissions for MyRepos2."

The configuration should look like this:

After this adjustment, the members of Team1 will not be able to see MyRepos2. When attempting to open MyRepos2, they will see the message below;

a good comprehensive reference for the proper way of using and orchestrating Organizations, Projects, Teams, Areas, Azure DevOps Groups, Users, Repositories, etc

That is a large range of material. I can't give you such a reference. I can just share some of my experience with you.

(1) If you want to set the user's permission to access some projects, just go to the Users tab on the Organization Settings page, click the ellipsis icon, and choose Manage Projects:

(2) In the Permissions tab of the Organization Settings page, you can set permissions which affect the whole organization, including all projects/repos.

For any specific object permission (build, workitem, etc.), just go to the corresponding object and configure it.

In the docs, we offer precise permission setting descriptions. You can refer to them here:

If these are not enough for you, just share your problems or questions here. Maybe I can advise you further.

Devops repository

Securing devops

<youtube>
Securing devops Latest news headlines today Securing devops
Security Champions: a Scalable Approach for Securing DevOps

The enormous growth of DevOps is no accident. As organizations attempt to navigate the complexities of digital business, speed and flexibility are everything. Yet somewhere between innovation and disruption lies a basis fact: A DevOps initiative is only as good as the security framework that supports it.

Unfortunately, many organizations focus on speed and precision at the expense of security. The problem, according to a 2017 report from Gartner, is that DevSecOps is about speed and precision, yet security is often seen by development managers as a training burden or blocking issue. As a result, organizations become mired in a ?fix it later? mentality.*

Overcoming this hurdle can prove daunting. Tossing money at more security and more training isn't necessarily the answer. A better approach centers on developing security champions who convey security priorities to colleagues. This approach boosts buy-in. It also speeds the feedback loop and helps translate security priorities into secure development practices that span groups and jargon.

Code Red

Establishing a DevSecOps framework is at the center of an agile and flexible enterprise. But putting the concept into motion is easier said than done. For one thing, business leaders must move beyond the perception that security is a roadblock for effective DevOps. When security is successfully integrated into processes and workflows, it creates a more streamlined and secure development environment. For another, they must adopt the right methods and techniques.

Gartner points out: ?The use of a security champion grants organizations an individual who can act as an on-site advisor and as an expert who can anticipate potential design or implementation problems early in the development process. Champions can reduce the perceived complexity of secure coding by providing immediate, real-world examples in the team's code and can focus on immediate remediation rather than more abstract, less relatable issues. ?*

Moving Beyond DevOps

There are several steps that can help an organization cultivate security champions and make the leap to DevSecOps: Ask for volunteers, Establish a minimum baseline of what it takes to be qualified as a security champion, Provide training for these basic skills, Set expectations about time commitments, Train team leaders whenever possible.* Please read the report for a fuller description of these topics.

A Winning Approach

While there is no simple or single way to transform DevOps into DevSecOps, security champions can serve as a powerful tool. They can help an organization adopt a best practice approach.

Learn how to take your DevOps program to the next level by cultivating security champions.

*Gartner - Magic Quadrant for Application Security Testing, Ayal Tirosh, Dionisio Zumerle, Mark Horvath, 19 March 2018

Securing devops

Azure devops effort

<youtube>
Azure devops effort Today's news headlines Azure devops effort
Azure DevOps HandBook !

Arun Kumar Singh

Sep 9 В· 4 min read

Azure DevOps is an offering from Microsoft which accelerate and simplify the DevOps process. This service comes with version control, reporting, requirements management, project management, automated builds, testing and release management capabilities. It covers the entire application life-cycle, and enables DevOps capabilities. In this post I am trying to cover some important points which can help you while working on pipelines. Before you start reading further I must warn you that this post expects basic knowledge of Azure DevOps pipeline.

Important Predefined variables -

Agent.BuildDirectory <Pipeline>Workspace] ? The location on the agent pool machine where all folders for a given build pipeline are created.

Agent.TempDirectory ? A temporary folder that is cleaned after each pipeline job. You can use to create some secure file and clean it up after that

Build.ArtifactStagingDirectory ? Use it for publishing artifacts, This directory is purged before each new build

System.DefaultWorkingDirectory ? As the name says default working dir

Build.BuildId or Build.BuildNumber choice is yours !

Container Jobs -

Sometimes it?s important to run Jobs on container. It will help you to reduce dependency on agent pool nodes. Containers offer a lightweight abstraction over the host operating system.

Agent Node Pool

In some cases you may need to select specific node from node pool. This is helpful in those cases when you need to identify node issues or specific node has some package which is required for your Job.

Run time Parameters

Pipeline Variables

Agent creates working space on disk to hold the source code, artifacts, and outputs used in the run.

Other items that the agent can upload include artifacts and test results. These are also available after the pipeline completes. If you want to publish artifact

By default, files are downloaded to $(Pipeline.Workspace)/ <artifact>, where artifact is the name of the artifact.

Classic Pipeline vs YAML based

Azure DevOps Classic pipeline is the original mechanism for pipeline building. Then Microsoft came with newer and improved concept of YAML based pipelines. These pipelines allowed to work on pipelines as code and you can keep them in repository. This allowed greater flexibility and control.

Classic pipelines are not going to hold longer and Microsoft is putting less attention to it. Both mechanisms are having their pros and cons but the things is Microsoft is putting effort on YAML based. So I believe its time to move on.

More detailed comparison can be referred here ?

Azure devops effort

It requires the plan-and-code phase including Agile planning, task tracking, version management and code review.

CI/CD Pipeline: A Critical Tool for DevOps

While DevOps requires a cultural change for developers, having the right tools right is also essential. Automating the pipeline for continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) lets developers get new features in front of end users faster, while still assuring high quality.

Container-Based CD

Continuous deployment (CD) lets operations teams automatically release code changes and deploy them to production in short cycles, reliably and repeatedly. The use of containers has changed what?s possible when it comes to CD.

Continuous Monitoring

Continuous monitoring (CM) is a practice whereby management and monitoring teams monitor applications and infrastructure on a 24/7 basis to prevent downtime.
